Mix #28 - The President's Mix

Hello Mix Tapers!

I have been trying to think about what the first blog would be like after the hiatus. It feels like it should be bigger/better than usual (which put the pressure on me) because I haven't been writing, but then I realized that it is not that I haven't been writing, it has been that I haven't been sharing. Which means that I really have nothing to prove. Well at least not sharing with more than a couple of people at a time - generally after a lot of drink.
The end of the year almost always begs for mix tapes as you try to decide what you have found throughout the year and more importantly what has stuck as some outstanding new music. I don't have a year end review today... as more pressing issues are at play. Namely - the swearing in of a new President.

The first playlist consists of songs about presidents or tied/inspired by presidents. The second is a mix of songs by artists Obama as said are on his iPod.

So it has been a rough end of the year over here at the Mix Tapes Home Office. It seems I have found myself a tad laid off and have been traveling around 1930's style looking for work. There have been some times and I hope to bring you the music that tells the tales.

I just thought I would drop a little note saying that music is coming... from Tennessee and beyond.

Recent Purchases Vol. 2

Here is a little list of music that is newly purchased:

1) Rodriguez - Cold Fact ---- I got turned on to this record by Andrew down at The Groove in Nashville. NPR did a little story on it recently. The album was recorded in late 1969 and soon after both Rodriguez and the album disappeared. It has been recently reprinted and is totally worth it. Check it out. If you are in Nashville The Groove has vinyl.

2) Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue --- I was worried about this one. I really liked the first album quite a bit and was curious whether it could be duplicated or exceeded without The Watson Twins' help. After my first listen I am not sure what I think. There are some gems on there for sure, but I might have wanted her to not change her sounds at all. . . and well. . . she changed. I think it is worth a listen and I also think it is a grower.

3) Home Schooled: The ABCs of Kid Soul - This is a compilation released by The Numero Group. If you are not familiar with this label they find lost music (usually based on a genera) gather it up and release it as a compilation. The ABCs of Kid Soul was all recorded around the time The Jackson 5 were blowing up. Every small label tried their hand at creating a Jackson 5. All of these tracks have been rolling around in obscurity for a decades. I believe they were all recorded by kids between 12 and 17. Check this album out, and check this label out.

4) Otis Redding - Live at Whiskey A Go-Go
Otis Redding - The Soul Album ---- I picked up both of these albums after the reprint for less than they were actually worth. I suppose there isn't so much to say about it. If you don't know Otis Redding go out now and buy a record, go outside and blast it at night and drink a bottle of wine. You will be hooked from then on. These two records are excellent records to start with!

5) Eddie Bo - In the Pocket with Eddie Bo --- I have been looking for a record from this guy for a long time. I was hanging out up in Newport KY a couple of years ago catching up with old friends and Eddie Bo was the background for the evening. In the Pocket with. . . is a new release that collects a sampling of music that spans Bo's entire career. I enjoyed this record but it didn't live up to the memory of that first unfindable record I heard. Anything by Bo is recommended!

Mix #27 - Friends and Lovers

Holy Shit is this is a new mix! Yes, it is – and it is a doozy.

We have had 26 mixes with many different themes, but this one is the most personal and intriguing.

Michelle offers up a mix titled “Friends and Lovers.”

Simply the theme is: Everyone on this mix is someone that is a friend or a lover. For the sake of public anonymity we won’t say who is who or which is which, but I will say that are more lovers than friends on this list, the friends were added in after the original mix was completed to so that you “the listener” would have to try to figure it out – and Michelle said it would be ok to contact her to ask questions; try to guess or hear the stories. If the conversations are good, maybe they will make the comments.

My first thought was “What a theme?” then it was “ You have fucked enough musicians to make a mix” and then it was “Oh, you didn’t fuck 'them'?“ and then it was "isn’t the term Rock & Roll a 20’s slang for sex in the first place?”
I am always looking for that type of convergence on this blog – and never really get it! Here is some info about the origins of the phrase “Rock & Roll”:

Three different songs with the title "Rock And Roll" were recorded in the late 1940s, and the phrase was in constant use in the lyrics of R&B songs of the time. The phrase was also included in advertisements for the film Wabash Avenue, starring Betty Grable and Victor Mature.
Before then, the phrase "rocking and rolling", as secular black slang for dancing or sex, appeared on record for the first time in 1922 on Trixie Smith's "My Man Rocks Me With One Steady Roll". Even earlier, in 1916, the term "rocking and rolling" was used with a religious connotation, on the phonograph record "The Camp Meeting Jubilee" by an unnamed male "quartette".[2] The word "rock" had a long history in the English language as a metaphor for "to shake up, to disturb or to incite". In 1937, Chick Webb and Ella Fitzgerald recorded "Rock It for Me," which included the lyric, "So won't you satisfy my soul with the rock and roll." "Rocking" was a term used by black gospel singers in the American South to mean something akin to spiritual rapture. By the 1940s, however, the term was used as a double entendre, ostensibly referring to dancing, but with the sub textual meaning of sex, as in Roy Brown's "Good Rocking Tonight."

There you have it! From the beginning to Elvis to the backstage parties after 80’s hair metal bands – getting it on has always been linked to the phrase rock and roll

Jesse delivers. This tape came in late last week - and I have had this post ready for about 3 days - sorry to keep you guys waiting. . .

This is a mix I have been waiting for since the I first started posting mixes. When decided to request/post mixes I had a couple of ideas for mixes I hoped I would get, and this is one of them.
I am not the biggest fan of instrumental tracks. I suppose that is because I am lyrics person - it is the same reason I can be a fan of old shitty recordings, and super lo-fi music - but without lyrics we get to write our own stories. Without lyrics it is easier for every listener to get a different experience. Couple that with the fact that by making a mix tape you are are taking any influence the author of the song had by placing in a specific order on the original album, and you seem to have more control on altering the songs meaning. I think it leads to a mix tape whose intent is uniquely decided by the listener.

Special Note: Judy is a Dick Slap is my second favorite dirty intramental track title - a close second right behind, "Lick my Love Pump" from Spinal Tap. In D minor - the saddest of all keys.

Here we are days late due to technical difficulties. Sometimes the internets have a way of working against us. It has been a very lazy four days of trying and finally on Thursday, you have a mix tape! We never really claimed to punctual or prompt (or honest, or respectful.) I didn't think it was going to happen this week.

This latest, four-day-late, installment is a double disk. Heroes & Villains. The one thing that instantly jumped out at me is how fascinated musicians are with comic book heroes, especially the Wu-Tang. I suppose it makes sense - being into music is pretty nerdy, and loving super heroes is pretty nerdy.

So after a week off, I received two mixes from Andrew Craig. If you are new or don't remember his previous mixes check them out HERE.

Many times when we are talking about mix tapes they have an expressed purpose - an intent. The intent is usually based on what we want the listener to get out of the mix. So that is the simple equation:

target audience + intended message = a unique group of songs

The songs you choose are then supposed to cause some kind of action (or emotion). That is why mixes are often created at the beginning of relationship, at the end of relationships, someone moving away, graduations. The big events. The events you feel like you need to define.

So what happens in the iPod era? We are creating mix tapes (playlists) for everything. We are creating them because we are "On-The-Go". It is easier. There is less searching, seemingly less consideration. A mix because it is easy. So what are we left with?

A bunch of really kick-ass, "this-is-what-I-have-been-listening-to-and-I-am-going-to-burn-a-copy-for-my-next-road-trip-and-give-one-to-mixtapes-because-they-need-it" type of mixes -- and that is what we have today.

People in my neighborhood #1

This is a little segment where I will factually a describe situation that took place between me and someone that lives in my neighborhood.

So there I was. . . at the bar the other night and one of those troll-like-drunk-60-year-old men, who went by the handle, "K-Mart" was talking to the girls that we were with about Vietnam and black jet pilots being an impossibility in his mind and then he got to me. He patted my belly and before he could say anything I said, "Before you say anything you should check out this (motions to upper arm) because I have been working out" he said, "I am the best God Damn street fight in East Nashville." The way he said it I knew it was quite possibly true and I could find out anytime I pleased. This ended the interaction. When were leaving he was singing Tootsie-Roll and telling the bartender who was obviously working to "get a god damn job."

Also, I was down at the park yesterday and as I passed a 12 year old boy with a Gumby-Kid&Play haircut and HE said, to ME, "Nice Hair, Fag" and then laughed at me. I am not sure what gay hair looks like, but I am pretty sure my hair is straight, and far more straight than a haircut from a 90's party movie on a little boy. What's next? Are his parents going to dress him like Sinbad and make him get Cross-Color shoes? I had nothing to say so I just kept on my way.
Right near the house a bumble bee flew up my shorts, but you can relax because it didn't get the "honey" and I made it home safely.

Mix #22 - Happy Birthday America

This Mix is a little out of format. It was just a quick little collection of songs about America. Things here at the Home Offices are chaotic and I wanted to get something up to celebrate the America's birthday. Special thanks to Matt Smith and Nelle Blevins for contributing some of the song choices.

I have been having technical issues all day, so there are a few songs that I wanted on the list that might be stuck somewhere in the internet.

The forth of July is a day where people celebrate freedom and America by getting drunk off shitty beer and blowing stuff up - which is probably pretty close to how the founding fathers spent their time, only they were probably banging chicks too... and owning slaves, but I don't think we are suppose to talk about that part anymore.

Yesterday a shirtless, mulleted homeless man came up to a group of us in the street and bummed a cigarette. When he turned around he is ass was hanging out. As he was walking away I yelled, "Your ass crack is showing" and he yelled back, "Crack kills motherfucker." And then sprinted up the street. There is some legit freedom in that little transaction. Happy Birthday America!

Mix #21 - State by State by Kertis

At one point I was traveling by car from Kentucky to New Orleans and tried to make a series of mix tapes that would be correlate to each state we were traveling through. Alabama was impossible, but I was able to hit a zydeco track when we rolled into NOLA. That is not exactly a track about Louisiana but, I feel like that is fairly close to success.

All songs on this mix include a state name. I actually had assembled about 30 songs, but 15 of them either sucked ass, or didn't fit exactly. I was going to weed it down to 13 tracks about the first 13 colonies, but that didn't seem to fit either . . . so what you get is 15 songs about states. During the search through my collection I found more songs about Michigan, Kentucky, and Tennessee than any other states. Which kind of makes sense. I could have probably done a whole Beach Boys mix about California, but that seems like cheating.

There are two tracks by Stufjan Stevens, but that makes sense since he makes albums dedicated to states.

Also, it seems like John Darnielle does a lot of "Going to ____" songs. Most them are about strife or hating/loving/hating someone. So that works out well.

Mix #20 - Takin' My Leave

Leaving a relationship (or being asked to leave) is one of the most consistent themes for a mix tape. Falling in love or out of love seems to be a subject musicians are always revisiting through their careers. This means that the songs to pull from on either of these topics are massive.

I would be interested to post a "falling in love mix" from a relationship that ended in flames if anyone still has one laying around. I wonder if there is any foreshadowing of what would eventually come on those mixes.

Speaking of mixes. I need more of them if this little project is to continue. So spread the word if you enjoy it!

some of the songs lyrics hold them responsible and clearly in control of meaning, while other parts of the music is unintentionally fulfilling something for both the artist and audience. it is important to me to orchestrate a mix with harmonious transitions and not let song titles or lyrics alone dictate my decisions. so the compilation of this is not only working the songs together but working my own methods, meanings and satisfactions into it as well.
