Recommends #5

Monday Night Mixtapes Recommends:

1) Eating Outside: Down side: Too Hot, Bugs, and the Sun in your eyes. Up Side: Feeling like a human being while eating.

2) Crazy People: Case 1: Nashville - Homeless man wearing a Michael Jackson-esque Thriller jacket walks up to me looking for money. When I give him change, he does a spin move and then the splits, then pops up and then leaves.

Case2: San Fransisco - A man hitting on two young hot woman on a bus wearing a bright red kimono and wielding a half loaf of bread tied to his backpack with rope. Duration - 20 minutes. Actually asks them to sleep with him.

Case 3: Cincinnati - A retired Vet in a wheel chair trades pulls from his cheap ass bottle of whiskey for change. Ups the ante but setting you up with woman on the street while drinking his whiskey for a dollar. Method of getting you a date? Pointing at you and asking woman if they want dick.

Why do I recommend it? - Because crazy people are human art. For free. And they are everywhere!

3) Ingenuity: It is cleverness that has been kicked in the nuts.

Mix #15 - Drink, Drank, Drunk

Creator: Cory Popp
Occupation: Film Student
Theme: Drinking
Title: Drink, Drank, Drunk

The first tape!

I haven't seen Cory in a long time, but he was quick to send in a tape. A real, analog, cassette tape. The package showed up in a manila envelop covered in beer labels. When I opened the package and dumped it on the counter, a confetti of beer caps, pop tops, and corks came pouring out. There was a perfect aesthetic to this delivery method.
Inside the tape was packaged in a DYI case that was crafted from old beer 12 pack cases. The track list was inked on the back of a 6 pack. The following was written on the inside of a Stella case:

When to listen to this tape:
To and from the liquor store, when drowning your sorrows after a long day, during happy hour, at AA meetings, at keggers!!!, when your drunk girlfriend shows up at your house unexpectedly to tell you she is going into rehab, and any and all other times, because really, when are you sober
The whole presentation was fantastic, and that is a big part of delivering a mix tape.

The last time I saw Cory, we watched this amazing piece of video.

Here is the music. Enjoy - Have a drink!

Recommends #4

Monday Night Mix Tapes Recommends:

1) Holes in the Knees of Your Jeans: Holes in your jeans is a statement. It is saying, "These jeans fit perfectly and I am not giving them up, Mom. What? I look homeless? No I don't! Homeless people don't have holes in there jeans they wear sweat pants, a 'Big Johnson T-shirt', and carry an Aldi's shopping bag."
Plus, that girl you had a crush on when you were 13 totally had holes in her jeans. So that raises them up on the list. She also was smoking a really bent Marlboro Red and liked Machine Head by Bush, so that kind of hurts the whole scene these days, but the jeans part is still a good look.
Remember: When the holes in the knees of your jeans turn into more, it is time to move on. No one wants to see your whole flank. You are not a slutty female hip-hop artist.

2) Sleeping on the Couch: It kind of hurts your back, and you don't sleep very well, but there is something extremely satisfying about falling over kicking off your boots and staying the fuck there until morning. Its like saying, "Look Body, I know we have been drinking since noon, and you are worn out, but seriously, I am only doing this for you, because I am totally ready to keep partying." Also, half the time you will wake up to the dog's snoot in your grill, and that is the closest city folks can come to waking up in the wilderness- and waking up the wilderness is good for the blood.

3) Writing Letters: Receiving a letter is a treat. I know, I know - It takes longer and your spelling isn't worth shit anymore, but seriously you should do it every once in a while. I can't even remember a single telephone number I have received after 1997. All this Myspace and Gchat has kind of made us retarded. Like not, I can't take care of myself retarded - more like I don't ever write in complete sentences retarded. Also, you would never do this in a letter: :-p, lol, brb, roflmao - because that shit should be banished.

Mix #14 - Cold Shoulder/Wild Woman

Creator: Caroline Wiser
Occupation: ???
Theme: Cold Shoulder/Wild Woman
Title: Cold Shoulder/ Wild Woman

New mix by Caroline Wiser. This one just showed up the Monday Night Mix Tapes home offices as a total surprise, and it is damn good.

Mix tapes are often traded at the beginning of relationships, not only as a gift to express thoughts or feelings toward your new romance, but also as an introduction to music and a gauge of your partners tastes. the Wild Woman mix seems to say, "you better watch out!" and the Cold Shoulder mix is saying, "this is what is coming, bitch!" Excellent.

It is a great line of songs. Wanda Jackson, while calmed down in her later years, but was a drinker and bagged Elvis, if rumors are true. I have also heard that she became born again and not to fully disregard her past singes church every Sunday somewhere in Nashville.

I will leave the rest to Caroline. Let her know what you think!

This mix was created for those times when you've rejected another or been pushed away by someone else. The songs encompass all of the viewpoints - from being the rejector and trying to talk sense into a loved one, to self reflection, to being the angry rejected one.

The Cold Shoulder Mix
Song - Artist

1) Mykonons - Fleet Foxes
2) Bye bye bye - Plants and Animals
3) Skinny Love - Bon Iver
4) I am trying to break your heart - Wilco
5) High and Dry - Radiohead
6) You are what you love - Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins
7) Empty Shell - Cat Power
8) The Empty Threats of Little Lords - Sunset Rubdown
9) Chelsea Hotel #2 - Leonard Cohen
10) You're Breaking my heart - Harry Nilsson

Well, this mix is fairly self-explanatory. There aren't really any deep-rooted themes on this mix, just a group of crazy ladies that sang a damn fine song or two in their day. Enjoy!

2) Rock n' Roll Nigger - Patti Smith
3) Hound Dog - Big Mama Thorton

Recommends #3

It is time for you to take Monday Night Mix Tapes recommendations.

1) Drinking on the Front Porch: Sure there are considerably less women to look at (and if I know your front porch, "considerably less" means zero), but take a break, booty-hound! Get a case of what you drink, put on some Otis Redding, and get fucked up out in nature like the good Lord intended. Plus, you never have to worry about getting home, you just have to worry about getting inside, and honestly you don't even have to worry about that. Right Andy?

2) Bumper Stickers: There is no faster way to be absolutely sure who you hate, especially from 20 feet away. Except for those brass sets of "balls" assholes put on their trucks, and people wearing Insane Clown Posse T-shirts. You can see those shirts coming forever because they only make them in 4X large. ICP fans are big. Probably from trying to eat away their shame.

3) High 5's: High 5's are the handshake of the Gods. If Michaelangelo had any guts that is what would be painted on the Sistine Chapel instead of that weak-ass finger touching. We believe in high 5's because you will forever avoid limp handshakes, and it sounds like smacking an ass.

Mix #13 - Songs that Spell

Creator: Matt Smith
Occupation: Retail
Theme: Spelling
Title: Songs that Spell

As Wu-Tang says, "Aw Shit, that's the jam."
I like this theme. This is kind of a quintessential "Monday Night Mix Tape" theme. What I found so interesting was until I was listening to these songs, grouped together like this, I don't think I would have been able to list so many songs with spelling.

I am a little hung over and I am going to let this one speak for itself. I want to leave you with these questions:
1) Don't you think Hall & Oats kind of blow?
2) Will you put a song on a mix that you hate, but fits so well you can't ignore it?
3) Isn't Wu-Tang actually the jam?

NOTE: Due to a bunch of mixes arriving. Next mix will be posted Thursday May, 8th. Keep sending them in. I'll keep posting them. Spread the word.

This is the anthem. . . get your damn hands up!

Enjoy.
Song-Artist

1) Izzo (Hova) - Jay Z
2) D.A.N.C.E. - Justice
3) Washington D.C. - Magnetic Fields
4) D.I.V.O.R.C.E. - Tammy Wynette
5) Friction - Television
6) Veloria - Pixies
7) Lola - The Kinks
8) Method Man - Wu-Tang Clan
9) Gloria - Patti Smith
10) Girlfriend - The Modern Lovers
11) Method of Modern Love - Hall & Oats
12) Respect - Aretha Franklin

Recommends #2

Monday Night Mix Tapes would like to recommend:

1) Beards: We are not talking about neck beards, chin straps, or mutton chops. And not mustaches. Mustaches are always ironic when you are under 35. Even if you don't know it. Unless you are a grit.
I once made eye contact with a guy in his 20's with a SERIOUS mustache. He came into the bar looking like Matthew McConaughey and asking for a paper towel and a ginger ale, because his girlfriend was puking in the car-- he was smiling the whole time. Making eye contact with him was was like staring into Abraham Lincoln's soul -- and you know what Abe Lincoln had? -- a beard.
Beards are nature's mask, grow one and stop being such a little pussy.

2) Audio books on a long car ride: Especially recommended if you are traveling to see music. I mean really how greedy are your ears? Listen Ears, let the brain have a little room once in a while. You get concerts, conversation, sweet nothings. . .
We have been shitting on the brain since before high school. I am sure you can find an audio book read by Morgan Freeman. The Ears love Morgan Freeman.

3) Going for it!: I mean what are you afraid of? What that you will fail? You fail all the time. You do. If you weren't always so stoned you would notice. I say buck up and do it. I mean what is the worst that could happen? Oh, you could die? I mean, aren't you a little dead on the inside already? I thought so.
