Recommends #7
Co-writing credit goes to Thom Snowden. If you haven't checked it out, you can find his mix here.
1) Bonnaroo: Its that time of the year again, kids. It will be hot, sweaty, sticky, expensive, with an arguably shitty line up. So why go? Because Bonnaroo is completely lawless. It is to music fans what Tangiers, Morocco was to the Beat writers - only instead of doing opium and sleeping with 15 year old boys you will be doing hallucinogens and listening to a seemingly endless stream of music . . . with people that are into jam bands.
I know, I know, I know, it sounds like this combo might ruin your well-crafted buzz, but when I went, my trip started with a van load of shirtless neo-hippies playing drums right next to my tent - then they disappeared for three days - and on the last day one of the guys reappeared as I woke up. He was standing on top of his van, free-style gasta rapping at everyone on the ground about murder and jewelry and had a very fresh new tattoo of a fully grown oak tree on his back.
So I guess what I am trying to say is that Bonnaroo is a place of experimentation and growth and sometimes you come as one person and leave as another. . . an acorn to an oak tree. . . which is good, because so many of those people suck at life.
2) Turning in applications via the internet: Many things about the digital age sucks. Nothing is personal, and our attention spans have decreased to a point where goldfish are going to start telling us where we left our keys - seriously when was the last time you applied for a job in your underwear? Never- that's when. Revel in that shit.
3) Spending time with your internet friend "craigslist": What an age we live in! With the click of a mouse you can get a flat screen TV or an erotic message for a reasonable price. The downside? I can't see one. . . I see many. . . But I won't notice because I will be watching my brand new Bravio Television while getting a happy ending. SNAP!

Mix #18 - Books & Authors
Creator: Thom Snowden
Occupation: Man of the People
Theme: Literature
Title: Books & Authors
This is a theme I always had on reserve in my head. I think it is because mix tapers and readers are a cross-over crowd. It always seem when I am out and start talking about music, books will eventually come up. Does it go hand in hand? Maybe so? I know I like albums better than just listening to a single song, and I equate it with reading just a single chapter of a book. You don't get the whole message, right? Or at least you don't see the whole intent.
Anyway, Thom explains it as follows:
Honestly, I don't like most of the songs. Originally I wanted to do all metal songs about Hemingway, which would be brilliant. I started to find other songs that I thought would mix well then decided to keep them. For example: The opening clip is from the film adaptation of Lolita. It is an amazing scene from the movie and I love albums with sound clips in them. Then, I found Bloodhag. They are a band that only writes songs about books. I read that when they perform live, they throw books at the audience. This is too good to leave out. There are some really crappy songs, too. The Pat Benatar and Metallica songs suck, for example. But, I like Hemingway and I liked Wuthering Heights. So, I decided to include them. Kate Bush, a really annoying singer/ song writer, did the original version of Wuthering Heights, but I hate her more than I hate Pat Benatar. I have, in the end, put together a mix that probably ninety percent of real music lovers would hate. But, I hope that you find some kind of fun in it.
Also, Thom broke the Metallic seal. I knew it would happen sooner or later. It is good timing though. They are on their way to Tennessee right now to be one of the headliners at Bonnaroo. I can't wait to see the washed up jam band's fans mingle with the washed up metal band's fans. The stink will be superb and the clashing of the fonts on their T-shirts will be nauseating!
Enjoy! It is a good mix!

1) Getting In Your Car and Driving 1055 Miles Overnight To Have Fun In NYC For A Week: It may sound a little extreme, but seriously we are doing it in T-Minus 2 hours and we are pumped. (Look for us high-5ing Stephen Colbert as he goes over to do his interview.)
As a sub-recommends we are looking forward to drinking here and doing this!
Enjoy the new mix and we will have another one for you on Monday!

Mix #17 - Palette Knife
Occupation: Graphic Designer
Theme: Color
Title: Palette Knife
I give extra points for a mix tape theme connected to your profession. I also give extra points because Karissa emailed me a jpeg for an album cover she created. And of course anytime you can double dip on your theme you should be commended - 'Color' songs by bands with colors in their names (Pink Floyd and the White Stripes. . . Clever!)
I have talked with people who say at least half of making a mix tape is in the presentation.
How is it delivered? What kind of art did you add? Tape vs. CD vs. sending files?
I always seem to focus more on the songs - order, variety, making sure they are on the theme or saying what I want, than on the art, case, delivery. I fret over the type of songs on the mix. I want to make sure that there is enough "classics" on the tape so I don't lose the audience, but also add enough new stuff on there to make it interesting. On every mix tape there is usually a song I don't like, but it fits the theme too well. So it goes.
NOTE: This is the first time that R.E.M, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix have been included on a mix tape on this site.

Song - Artist
1) Any Color You Like - Pink Floyd
2) Paint The Silence - South

New Music #1
Second - Here at the Monday Night Mix Tapes home office, we buy music. A lot of music. Too much music. So I thought I would start a series about the music that we buy.
Artist: Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Album: Lie Down in the Light
I have been a fan of Will Oldham and/or his other incarnations for a while. I wasn't a fan right away. I think it takes a minute to get your ears out of tune enough to like it. An "Appalachian Post-Punk Lo-fi" aesthetic is hard to love right away. I also haven't been a fan of every release. Drag City releases something from Will Oldham, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Palace Brothers, Palace Songs or Palace Music, or a collaboration so often I don't connect with all of it.
I picked the new record up in Louisville at Ear-X-tacy while passing through Kentucky earlier this week. I was happy that I had it to see me onward to the South. I think it is the strongest release in a while. Track one: "Easy Does It" will get you right away.
I am not going give you some sort of track review or album overview. Check it out. You will like it.
Check out what Pitchfork has to say.

Mix #16 - Double or Nothing
Occupation: Graphic Designer
Theme: Two in a Row
Title: Double or Nothing
This is a long eclectic mix for getting back into work after the holiday weekend. Tons of songs to enjoy.
I was really excited by so much world music (a genre that was lacking up until now, but Stacy fixed that in a big way.) This mix introduced me to Huun-Huur-Tu. Holy shit! I was going to save it for a "recommends", but I felt that everyone needed to check it out. Their music is good, but their style is amazing.
The idea behind this mix is two songs by the same artists or two songs off the same album. She also provided the album that she got the music from so you can track it down!
That is all from me for now. Enjoy the mix! Let her know what you think?
As far as what to say about my mix, it's just stuff that's currently in my rotation, *OR* that I simply have to include otherwise it just wouldn't be me. I have to include Galaxie 500 and GN'R. Period. Me and Sly & The Family Stone go way back too. Sly understands me. We just get closer as the years go by. Oh and I deeply regret not remembering to include Serge Gainsbourg. Poopy. Mix tapes are hard! Nobody cares as much as I do, anyway. ;)

Recommends #5
1) Eating Outside: Down side: Too Hot, Bugs, and the Sun in your eyes. Up Side: Feeling like a human being while eating.
2) Crazy People: Case 1: Nashville - Homeless man wearing a Michael Jackson-esque Thriller jacket walks up to me looking for money. When I give him change, he does a spin move and then the splits, then pops up and then leaves.
Case2: San Fransisco - A man hitting on two young hot woman on a bus wearing a bright red kimono and wielding a half loaf of bread tied to his backpack with rope. Duration - 20 minutes. Actually asks them to sleep with him.
Case 3: Cincinnati - A retired Vet in a wheel chair trades pulls from his cheap ass bottle of whiskey for change. Ups the ante but setting you up with woman on the street while drinking his whiskey for a dollar. Method of getting you a date? Pointing at you and asking woman if they want dick.
Why do I recommend it? - Because crazy people are human art. For free. And they are everywhere!
3) Ingenuity: It is cleverness that has been kicked in the nuts.
