Mix #18 - Books & Authors

Creator: Thom Snowden
Occupation: Man of the People
Theme: Literature
Title: Books & Authors

This is a theme I always had on reserve in my head. I think it is because mix tapers and readers are a cross-over crowd. It always seem when I am out and start talking about music, books will eventually come up. Does it go hand in hand? Maybe so? I know I like albums better than just listening to a single song, and I equate it with reading just a single chapter of a book. You don't get the whole message, right? Or at least you don't see the whole intent.

Anyway, Thom explains it as follows:

Honestly, I don't like most of the songs. Originally I wanted to do all metal songs about Hemingway, which would be brilliant. I started to find other songs that I thought would mix well then decided to keep them. For example: The opening clip is from the film adaptation of Lolita. It is an amazing scene from the movie and I love albums with sound clips in them. Then, I found Bloodhag. They are a band that only writes songs about books. I read that when they perform live, they throw books at the audience. This is too good to leave out. There are some really crappy songs, too. The Pat Benatar and Metallica songs suck, for example. But, I like Hemingway and I liked Wuthering Heights. So, I decided to include them. Kate Bush, a really annoying singer/ song writer, did the original version of Wuthering Heights, but I hate her more than I hate Pat Benatar. I have, in the end, put together a mix that probably ninety percent of real music lovers would hate. But, I hope that you find some kind of fun in it.

Also, Thom broke the Metallic seal. I knew it would happen sooner or later. It is good timing though. They are on their way to Tennessee right now to be one of the headliners at Bonnaroo. I can't wait to see the washed up jam band's fans mingle with the washed up metal band's fans. The stink will be superb and the clashing of the fonts on their T-shirts will be nauseating!

Enjoy! It is a good mix!

Mix #16 - Double or Nothing

Creator: Stacy Jackson
Occupation: Graphic Designer
Theme: Two in a Row
Title: Double or Nothing

This is a long eclectic mix for getting back into work after the holiday weekend. Tons of songs to enjoy.

I was really excited by so much world music (a genre that was lacking up until now, but Stacy fixed that in a big way.) This mix introduced me to Huun-Huur-Tu. Holy shit! I was going to save it for a "recommends", but I felt that everyone needed to check it out. Their music is good, but their style is amazing.

The idea behind this mix is two songs by the same artists or two songs off the same album. She also provided the album that she got the music from so you can track it down!

That is all from me for now. Enjoy the mix! Let her know what you think?

As far as what to say about my mix, it's just stuff that's currently in my rotation, *OR* that I simply have to include otherwise it just wouldn't be me. I have to include Galaxie 500 and GN'R. Period. Me and Sly & The Family Stone go way back too. Sly understands me. We just get closer as the years go by. Oh and I deeply regret not remembering to include Serge Gainsbourg. Poopy. Mix #15 - Drink, Drank, Drunk

Creator: Cory Popp
Occupation: Film Student
Theme: Drinking
Title: Drink, Drank, Drunk

The first tape!

I haven't seen Cory in a long time, but he was quick to send in a tape. A real, analog, cassette tape. The package showed up in a manila envelop covered in beer labels. When I opened the package and dumped it on the counter, a confetti of beer caps, pop tops, and corks came pouring out. There was a perfect aesthetic to this delivery method.
Inside the tape was packaged in a DYI case that was crafted from old beer 12 pack cases. The track list was inked on the back of a 6 pack. The following was written on the inside of a Stella case:

When to listen to this tape:
To and from the liquor store, when drowning your sorrows after a long day, during happy hour, at AA meetings, at keggers!!!, when your drunk girlfriend shows up at your house unexpectedly to tell you she is going into rehab, and any and all other times, because really, when are you sober
The whole presentation was fantastic, and that is a big part of delivering a mix tape.

The last time I saw Cory, we watched this amazing piece of video.

Here is the music. Enjoy - Have a drink!

Mix #14 - Cold Shoulder/Wild Woman

Creator: Caroline Wiser
Occupation: ???
Theme: Cold Shoulder/Wild Woman
Title: Cold Shoulder/ Wild Woman

New mix by Caroline Wiser. This one just showed up the Monday Night Mix Tapes home offices as a total surprise, and it is damn good.

Mix tapes are often traded at the beginning of relationships, not only as a gift to express thoughts or feelings toward your new romance, but also as an introduction to music and a gauge of your partners tastes. the Wild Woman mix seems to say, "you better watch out!" and the Cold Shoulder mix is saying, "this is what is coming, bitch!" Excellent.

It is a great line of songs. Wanda Jackson, while calmed down in her later years, but was a drinker and bagged Elvis, if rumors are true. I have also heard that she became born again and not to fully disregard her past singes church every Sunday somewhere in Nashville.

I will leave the rest to Caroline. Let her know what you think!

This mix was created for those times when you've rejected another or been pushed away by someone else. The songs encompass all of the viewpoints - from being the rejector and trying to talk sense into a loved one, to self reflection, to being the angry rejected one.

The Cold Shoulder Mix
Song - Artist

1) Mykonons - Fleet Foxes

3) Skinny Love - Bon Iver
4) I am trying to break your heart - Wilco

7) Empty Shell - Cat Power
8) The Empty Threats of Little Lords - Sunset Rubdown
9) Chelsea Hotel #2 - Leonard Cohen
10) You're Breaking my heart - Harry Nilsson

Well, this mix is fairly self-explanatory. There aren't really any deep-rooted themes on this mix, just a group of crazy ladies that sang a damn fine song or two in their day. Enjoy!

Mix #13 - Songs that Spell

Creator: Matt Smith
Occupation: Retail
Theme: Spelling
Title: Songs that Spell

As Wu-Tang says, "Aw Shit, that's the jam."
I like this theme. This is kind of a quintessential "Monday Night Mix Tape" theme. What I found so interesting was until I was listening to these songs, grouped together like this, I don't think I would have been able to list so many songs with spelling.

I am a little hung over and I am going to let this one speak for itself. I want to leave you with these questions:
1) Don't you think Hall & Oats kind of blow?
2) Will you put a song on a mix that you hate, but fits so well you can't ignore it?
3) Isn't Wu-Tang actually the jam?

NOTE: Due to a bunch of mixes arriving. Next mix will be posted Thursday May, 8th. Keep sending them in. I'll keep posting them. Spread the word.

This is the anthem. . . get your damn hands up!

Enjoy.

Mix #12 - Your City

Creator: Jesse Chula
Occupation: Inside Advertising Sales
Theme: Your City
Title: That Manchester Sound

I don't know much about Manchester. I don't know much about these bands. I couldn't have made this mix.
Good thing Jesse did. I like the concept. Music as place. While people don't always think about it in those terms, some music just sounds distinctly related to a region. You'll hear people say a track sounds "Detroit" or a rap album is very "Atlanta." It is just typical for a city to develop a nationally recognizable sound.

I know this I live in Nashville.

This is from Jesse the creator:
Sooner or later the World’s first Industrialized city would get it right. Most of us love the Cities we live in for one reason or another. Why shouldn’t we? It’s home right? Well certain cities are known for different things, and besides their famous sports teams, Manchester, England has always been known for its music. The “Madchester” scene was born in the 80’s with bands like The Smiths, and The Stone Roses. The following short mix tape highlights bands from Manchester and surrounding areas. Although each song doesn’t mention Manchester by name, each song was carefully selected due to certain references of a city, place, area, or other facet of the Manchester, or English culture.
Enjoy.

Jesse,
Since I am the one putting it online, I have already heard the mix. I dug it. Thanks for sending it in! Just a warning, someone might try to bust your ass for excluding Joy Division... you know how their fans get!
Thanks,
Monday Night Mixtapes

NOTE 2: Feel free to comment.

Mix #11 - School/ Work

Creator: Casey Chalmers
Occupation: Videographer
Theme: School and Work
Title: School/Work(Double Disc)

I always am exited to get a mix from Casey, because it, without fail, introduces me to a ton of new music. It also makes me curious how I didn't already know a group named "Cock Sparrer"? It seems like I should be on their mailing list.

These are both fun mixes, and it surprised me how often many of the Wu-Tang Clan affiliates sung (growled) about school. I suppose it is a topic almost all us have in common with the Wu-Tang Clan -- at least that and the fact that Clark's are really comfortable, and we should all diversify our stocks and bonds. They're no one to fuck with.

I was surprised that the Jackson 5's, "ABC" didn't make the list, and I was very happy to see that Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Takin' Care of Business" was absent.

BTO - First there is no "Overdrive" about any of their music. Just the term "overdrive" seems like you should be the opposite of everything they are about. I can't condone the misappropriation of that term.

Second, every corporate event I have ever been a part of (and there have been too many) use this song as some kind of rocking anthem, and if it doesn't start the day out, it WILL close the convention down as part of some slide show event that magically makes it seem like everyone wants to be sitting there for a week of eating buffet lunches, binge drinking the nights away in the bar to stay sane, and late night groping of co-workers.

In Canada, they eat that shit up!

Thumbs up for the Uncle Tupelo, Willie Hightower, and The Degrassi High Theme Song.

My only other comment is: It takes some balls to put a 7 minute Pet Shop Boys Song on any mixed tape.
